The more things change, the more they stay the same. For the tenth consecutive year, at least one of the Oak Park Raiders and the Vincent Massey Trojans are in the MHSAA 4A Provincial Championship final, and for the second straight year, it involves both teams. Only this time, the roles are reversed - Oak Park comes in as the #1 seed (that they held all season) and WPG-1 Champion, while Vincent Massey looks to avenge a championship loss to regain the crown. The two teams met four times this season, with Oak Park taking all four.
The Oak Park Raiders return to the Championship game as defending champions, looking to repeat the feat done by the Sisler Spartans in 2015-16, and are looking to bring home their fifth banner. They come in having lost only one game this season, to an Alberta-based team in the Ainlay Tri-Prov tournament championship in Edmonton, allowing them to hold the #1 spot all season. They average a 4A-high 76.1 points per game (2360 in 31 games) - seven points higher than the next highest team - and hold the stingiest defense at 40.7 points allowed per game (1262 total), two full possessions better than any other team, giving them a +35.4 spread this season. They are a very high-scoring offense, eclipsing 70 points in 23 of 31 games, and 80 in 11 of those games, while not giving up on defense, holding teams to 50 or less 22 times, and 40 or less 13 times. The Raiders averaged 80 points in their two games thus far, while only giving up 99 total, and with their ability to rebound (72 in the semifinal), they look to continue their ways on both offense and defense.
The Vincent Massey Trojans are in the Championship game for the third-straight season, and fourth of the past five (1-2), and are looking to avenge the WPG-1 Championship loss, as well as last year's Provincial Championship loss by grabbing their 11th crown. Not including their four matches against the Raiders, Vincent Massey has only dropped two games this season - a pair of January matchups against the Sturgeon Heights Huskies that they avenged in the conference semifinal - the first of which caused them to fall out of the #2 spot for the only week this season. Their 63.8 points per game (1787 points in 28 games) in scoring is good for the third-highest by a Winnipeg-based team this season, while their 51.4 points against (1439 total) is good for fourth. While they may not be as explosive as Oak Park, the Trojans can still score, with 60 or more points in 17 of their contests this season, while holding teams under the same mark 21 times. They also have no quit, as evidenced by their second-half play in their semifinal against the Glenlawn Lions - facing a deficit of 12 points at 43-31, they would outscore the Lions 34-18, with a 10-5 advantage in the last 3:35 of the game - all on field goals, while also taking the ball away from the Lions' hands 17 times by the steal.
The conference rivals have gone back and forth with their records in the past three years, with the Trojans going 4-0 in 2015-16, while the Raiders have gone a combined 8-1 in the past two seasons. The teams combine for five of the top 10 in the Winnipeg Sun's annual coaches poll, and both teams look to re-kindle the rivalry in yet another Provincial Championship classic on Monday night.
